Hearing Tests For Children London

Why Early Testing Matters:

Early identification of hearing difficulties is clinically significant. Undetected hearing loss in childhood can affect speech and language development, educational progress, social interaction and behaviour.

If your child's speech and language therapist has requested a hearing test, or if you have noticed any of the signs listed below, a prompt diagnostic assessment is strongly recommended.

Signs Your Child May Have a Hearing Problem:

The following may indicate a hearing difficulty in children:

— Delayed speech or language development

— Mishearing or mispronouncing words

— Difficulty following instructions, particularly in background noise

— Not responding when called

— Asking for things to be repeated

— Wanting the television louder than others

— Pulling at or rubbing ears

— Changes in behaviour — becoming withdrawn, frustrated or inattentive

— Difficulties with concentration, reading or learning

— Teachers or parents noticing listening difficulties in classroom settings

Hearing Tests For Children London — What's Included:

Otoscopy

A clinical examination of the ear canal and eardrum using a medical otoscope, checking for blockages, infection or structural abnormalities.

Video Otoscopy

A live video examination of the ear canal and eardrum, displayed on screen so parents can see and understand findings in real time.

Tympanometry

An objective acoustic assessment of middle ear function, including eardrum mobility and the condition of the ossicular chain. Tympanometry is a key test for identifying glue ear (otitis media with effusion).

Pure Tone Audiometry:

Air-conduction and bone-conduction behavioural hearing testing across the full frequency range. This is the gold standard test for determining the type, degree and configuration of hearing loss, and for identifying where in the auditory pathway any difficulty lies.

Explanation of Results

Your audiologist will explain all findings clearly at the end of the appointment, providing a diagnosis where possible and outlining what the results mean for your child’s hearing health.

Your Audiologist will talk you through the children’s hearing test results and will be able to diagnose and let you know what is causing their hearing problem.

Recommendation & Solution

Based on the results, your audiologist will recommend the most appropriate management pathway — whether that is clinical treatment, onward referral, monitoring, or further specialist assessment.

Important Clinical Note:

  • This appointment is a diagnostic children’s hearing test. It is important that your child’s GP is informed of the outcomes so that continuity of NHS paediatric audiological care can be maintained where appropriate. If your child is receiving speech and language therapy, we recommend sharing the results directly with their therapist and education provider.

Pricing and Appointments:

  • Children’s hearing tests at Clearly Hearing are priced from £90. Appointments are available Monday to Friday, 08:00–20:00, at our East Dulwich and Soho clinics. Same-day appointments are available — call 020 7458 4525 to check availability.

Hearing Tests For Children London — What's Included:

Will my child find the test uncomfortable?

No. All tests are non-invasive and painless. Our audiologists are experienced in working with children and will explain each step in an age-appropriate way to keep your child relaxed throughout.

What is glue ear and can you test for it?

Glue ear (otitis media with effusion) is a common condition in children where fluid builds up in the middle ear, causing temporary hearing loss. Tympanometry, included in our full assessment, is specifically designed to detect this.

How is a children's hearing test different from an adult test?

The core tests are similar, but the methods used to obtain responses are adapted to suit the child’s age and developmental stage. Younger children may be assessed using play audiometry or visual reinforcement audiometry rather than the standard button-press method used with adults.

Can I stay with my child during the test?

Yes. Parents and carers are welcome and encouraged to stay with their child throughout the appointment.
