Committed musicians, producers and DJs readily put their hearing to task 24/7 to perfect that cherished familiarity with their music, and to ensure they are aware of all the nuances in a piece, all while listening out for ambient sounds around them.
Swimmers’ ears are particularly at risk, because any water that left in the ear for a long time becomes stagnant, and causes an infection. We perform an assessment to uncover what it is you need from your hearing goals and help you to meet them.
We also have the equipment to re-programme or adjust hearing aids sourced from all the manufacturers (Phonak, Unitron, Oticon, Starkey, GNResound, Signia, Bernafon) this includes retesting hearing levels for the most accurate of fittings. If your hearing solution no longer seems to provide as much benefit as it used to, it's quite possible that it requires a service and adjustment.
Following a visual examination of the outside of the ear, the ear canal and the eardrum, we perform the hearing sensitivity test - Pure Tone Audiometry. Hearing ability also depends on brain function so, besides the pure tone test of hearing sensitivity, we perform functional hearing tests such as speech tests in noise and speech sensitivity alongside cognitive function tests. This will help us decide how to manage the impact of each aspect of your hearing.
Tinnitus is a perception of sounds generated by the nervous system of the ear and brain often described as ringing, humming, whistling or buzzing noises. For some, it is unnoticeable or unbothersome, but for others treatment can help to relieve some debilitating tinnitus symptoms. There is a host of methods and support available at Clearly Hearing which have benefited our patients. There is no such thing as a Tinnitus ‘cure’, but Tinnitus management programmes at Clearly Hearing are tailored to the needs of the individual. It is important to remember that tinnitus affects people differently so there is no one solution for all but we can develop a detailed plan to put you on a path to relief.
Hearing Therapy is the process of treating hearing loss, tinnitus and hyperacusisis by training your capacity to hold your attention and recognise speech sounds. Microsuction is one of the safest methods to clean the ear. The audiologist treating you looks at your ear using a loupe. This magnifies the ear, making it easier to assess and treat. A suction device is used to clean the ear without the use of water. The gentle suction device works in a similar way to a vacuum cleaner and although it can be quite noisy, it is quick and painless. If the object being removed is hard, then removal can be slightly uncomfortable. The person performing the procedure will always advise you if they feel it is going to be uncomfortable. When microsuction is being used to remove wax, then the procedure tends to be less uncomfortable if a wax softening spray (for example, Earol® olive oil spray which can be purchased over the counter) is used for two nights before, and on the morning of, the appointment.
Symptoms suggesting the need for ear wax removal:
There are so many benefits of using microsuction over the traditional ear wax removal method - syringing. Syringing aims to remove wax blockages by squirting water into the ear canal and behind the blockage, in the hope that the water will build up enough pressure behind the blockage to push the wax out. There is no guarantee that the obstruction will be removed and this method has many risks.
With microsuction, ear wax or a foreign body can be removed so an ear examination can be carried out to check for any perforations or middle ear infections, and the ear can be treated appropriately. Microsuction, or microsuction with irrigation, is much safer than syringing, where there is no way to examine the ear first, potentially causing more damage with the procedure. Additionally, some people with tinnitus feel that their tinnitus is more troublesome when their ears are full of wax.
